Worship:
Who We Are
Our parish family welcomes you!
Our congregation's purpose is for persons of all ages to grow stronger
in faith through worship, deeper through learning, warmer through fellowship,
and broader by service to our neighbors in need.
Children and Christian education are vital to Our Savior's life. Blessed
with a Children's Ministry Director, Clare Masi and a Children's Music
Director, Elaine Ajello, children enjoy Kids' Klub on Tuesdays, as well
as participation in the Sunday service and Sunday Kids' Klub, which takes
place during the second half of the Sunday service.
We have a very active Youth ministry through Campus Life, a pan-denominational
youth group for Port Washington and Manhasset kids. All kids are welcome.
This is coordinated by Donna and Tom Rice and the LI Youth for Christ Leadership
Team, led by Craig Muller. Campus Life for 5th-12th graders meets on Friday
at 7:30-9:00 PM. Campus Life for 9th-12th graders meets Thursday nights
at 7:30-9:00PM. Both are at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.
Confirmation for 7/8th grade youth is on Mondays. Various Bible studies
and a Spiritual Growth Group are held throughout the year.
There's a place for everyone at Our Savior to be involved and make new
friends through small group ministries: the Altar Guild, Grace Guild, the
Ushers, the Lectors and Assisting Ministers, the Choirs, the Parish Orchestra,
Kids' Klub, the annual Harvest Fair, fellowship events, and committees
for the congregation's life and mission. Parish life and ministry depend
solely upon voluntary giving by members, guests and friends. We give away
more than10 percent of every financial gift we receive to various mission
partners and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We have an active
Endowment Grant committee that also contributes to mission partners each
year, both locally and world-wide.
Accessing the Church
An access ramp is located on the east side of the building. Restrooms are
located on the lower level. For those unable to use the stairs, there is
a main floor restroom in the pastor's office for your use. Ask an usher
for directions. Refreshments are usually served after services. In warmer
weather, the church is air-conditioned for your comfort.
Adults may join formally the congregation by either a letter of membership
transfer from another Christian congregation or by adult Confirmation.
Membership is voluntary. Persons join when they express the desire to affiliate.
Baptisms and weddings are conducted as needed. A church wedding requires
a couple to spend a period of time preparing for marriage in consultation
with the pastor.
The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated with this understanding:
that the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are truly present in, with, and
under the bread and wine; and, that the penitent receive the full forgiveness
of all their sins. All baptized Christians who, in good conscience, can
receive with this understanding are invited to partake.
Our History
Founded in 1915, this church was established an independent, English-speaking
congregation at a time when many Lutherans were rooted in the immigrant
cultures of the Lutheran territories in northern Europe. Our church mothers
and fathers intentionally sought to serve the entire Cow Neck peninsula
while maintaining a distinctive Lutheran identity and style. The congregation
has served thousands of girls, boys, women and men over the years, welcoming
all from different denominational backgrounds.
Worship was first held in rented space on South Washington Street and,
subsequently, Main Street. The current worship center was erected in 1925.
In 1962, the two-level Fellowship Hall was added, and later named for the
Rev. Mr. Henry von Schlichten, pastor from 1943 to 1974. Community groups
such as A.A., Al-Anon, the Outreach Program of the Parent Resource Center
and Boy Scouts are at home in the building during the week.
